Under the Clean Air Act, EPA is required to carry out a periodic review and revision, as appropriate, of the air quality criteria and the primary and secondary standards for six criteria air pollutants, which include sulfur oxides. EPA is currently reviewing the primary (health-based) NAAQS for sulfur dioxide (SO2) as an indicator for health effects caused by the presence of oxides of sulfur in the ambient air. Primary standards set limits to protect public health, including the health of "sensitive" populations such as asthmatics, children, and the elderly. As part of the NAAQS review process, EPA has requested CASAC review of their "Integrated Review Plan for the Primary National Ambient Air Quality Standard for Sulfur Dioxide - External Review Draft (March 2014)."
